Cape Aquatics Swim Club hosted its annual Swim-A-Thon last weekend in conjunction wioth USA?Swimming at the Cape Coral High School pool.
The purpose was to raise money to help pay for equipment and offset the costs in sending swimmers to meets outside the local area.
Swimmers were given one two-hour session in the pool. They each had a lap counter. They were limited to the two hours or 200 lengths of the 25-yard pool. (5,000 yards), whichever came first.
Sponsors either give the swimmer a specific donation, or offer so much per lap completed.
Here are some highlights:
73 swimmers participated;
46 swimmers completed 200 lengths of the pool;
The youngest swimmers to complete 200 lengths in two hours were Melissa Blaine and Maria Higgins, both 8 years old;
The youngest swimmer participating was 5-year-old Skye Persechino who completed 90 laps;
Swimmers completed 13,186 lengths of the pool;
329,650 total yards, which works out to 3,296 football fields or 187.3 miles (an average of 2.5 miles per swimmer.)
