The waters of Matlacha Pass and others will be teaming with anglers participating in the 11th annual David Lee Root Jr Memorial Fishing Tournament on Saturday.
Proceeds from the catch & release event benefit the trauma center at Lee Memorial Hospital. Past tournaments have raised more than $126,000 for the trauma center. The hospital currently is using some of the donated funds to construct a room for families of trauma victims.
A captain's dinner meeting kicks off the weekend at 6 p.m. on Friday at D&D Bait and Tackle in Matlacha. Anglers will launch their boats at 7 a.m. Saturday.
Anglers will fish for snook, redfish, trout and a mystery fish to be announced at the captain's meeting. Photographs are taken of each catch before releasing. Anglers report back to D&D from 3:30-4 p.m. for the photo weigh-in.
Past tournament have attracted up to 60 boats and 250 anglers. The entry fee is $50, $25 for ages 12 and under. Registration is open until the captain's meeting.
Anglers can register by calling D&D Bait & Tackle at 239-282-9122.
Dave Root, owner of D&D, initially started the tournament after a car accident took his son's life in 2001. Nine years ago, another son's life was saved after a car accident due to the air services of the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital.
Root then named the Trauma Center as the tournament's benefactor and it is the only fundraiser that benefits the center.
