Eleanor Harris Hazelton, 87, of Cape Coral, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Evans Health Care Center in Fort Myers after a long illness.

Mrs. Hazelton was born in her parents' home in Northport, N.Y., on Dec. 8, 1926, to long-time Northport Mayor Henry F. Richardson and his wife, Eleanor Richardson. She was married to Alan W. Hazelton of South Pasadena, Calif., in New York City in 1946, and she was a member of the congregation of Trinity Episcopal Church in Northport for many years.

Mrs. Hazelton was the proud mother of five children, who she and her husband raised in Northport and Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., before moving to Cape Coral in 1974. Her children, who she loved dearly, are Helen S. Hagan of Fort Myers, Robert H. Hazelton of Marstons Mills, Mass., Eleanor H. Tassinari (deceased), Courtney E. Hazelton III of Fort Myers and Anne L. Morey of Rancho Cordova, Califa.

She was also blessed with six grandchildren, Adam M. C. Hagan of Heber City, Utah, Theresa A. Hazelton of Otis, Mass., Casey Hagan of Cape Coral, Cassidy H. Jones of Myakka City, Fla., Robert G. Hazelton of Medford, Mass., and Dallas S. Tassinari of Phoenix, Ariz., and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hazelton was a lifelong avid sailor, on boats large and small. She learned to sail as a child and cruised with her parents on the family's schooner, as well as plying local waters with friends on her 15-foot sloop. She continued to cruise Long Island Sound and beyond with her own family after she was married, sharing with her children her love of sailing and the sea. They raced and cruised their boat on the gulf after they moved to Cape Coral, and she sailed to Europe with her husband in the late '70s and lived there on their boat for 10 years before returning to Cape Coral, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Mrs. Hazelton is survived by her loving husband of nearly 68 years; four of her children, her six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
