‘Plan 6’ not the only viable solution

July 10, 2014
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

Regarding the guest column " 'Plan 6' only viable solution to Okeechobee water discharges"

Of course, it depends on one's definition of "viable." One option Ray Judah neglected to mention in his opinion piece of July 4 was the elimination of government-imposed import quotas and production subsidies for domestic sugar. These policies result in dramatically higher sugar prices in this country, along with the water pollution it is going to cost Florida taxpayers billions to address.

Mr. Judah has a lot of experience in government, and I don't. Even so, his reference to Plan 6 as the "only meaningful solution" to the water problem ignores the 800-pound gorilla in the room. And that bothers me.
