In a unanimous vote Friday afternoon, the Cape Coral Community Foundation pledged the final $5,500 needed to make the Washington D.C. dream trip come true for 82 members of the Mariner and Cape Coral High School marching bands.

The two bands were nominated to take part in the 2014 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., a major, nationally televised event. The bands elected to join forces to raise the $64,250 needed to make the trip possible.

"These bands will not only represent Cape Coral, they will represent all of Florida," said Cape Coral High School Marching Seahawks Director Stacy Green in a prepared statement. "It is truly unique to have two bands that could be rivals working together so closely. It has been a wonderful experience. We are so excited to be going to Washington."

The students began holding fundraisers almost a year ago. With the trip now just days away, they were worried that they might not raise all of the money needed for applications, lodging, transportation, food and supplies.

"We are on cloud nine right now," said Mariner High School Silver Magic Marching Band Director James Samz in the statement. "The Community Foundation donation has made a huge difference. I can't tell you how much it means to see our community step up and to know that people are proud to see these fantastic, hard-working kids represent Cape Coral in our nation's capital on Memorial Day."

Cape Coral Community Foundation Board member Steve Riggs applauded the show of community support for our youth.

"This is truly an awesome investment," he said. "This will be a wonderful way to showcase our community to the rest of the world."

The students will leave from Cape Coral High School next Saturday at 4 p.m. The two bands will march down Constitution Boulevard playing the Stars and Stripes Finale and an arrangement of the Battle Hymn.
