9:30 a.m. update:

Per an update from FDOT, the traffic signal at Chiqita Boulevard and Pine Island Road will be out until this afternoon. The control cabinet was "fried due to a surge," and the cabinet will be replaced today.

Motorists should continue to use caution if they are traveling through this intersection, city officials said in an updated release.

A traffic crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon will have lasting effects on the Thursday morning commute.

Cape Coral Police Department worked a traffic crash involving a school bus around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday. The crash occurred at the intersection of Chiquita Boulevard and Pine Island Road. While there were no injuries, the crash caused substantial damage to the traffic light control box, knocking out the traffic signal at that intersection.

Officers have ben directing traffic at that intersection since the crash occurred. Due to the extent of the damage to the signal equipment, there is no estimate as to when the signal repair will be complete, officials said in a release issued early Thursday morning. Temporary modifications to the intersection have been made that will affect traffic flow during the morning commute. Those changes are:

* Northbound Chiquita is blocked off and is being detoured at Southwest 4th Street.

* Southbound Chiquita is blocked off and is being detoured at Southwest 6th Terrace.

* East and Westbound Pine Island Rd. are open, but there are temporary stop signs in place at the intersection of Chiquita Boulevard.

The Cape Coral Police Department urges commuters who normally pass through the intersection to seek an alternate route.

"When we are able to provide additional information regarding the signal repair, we will send out an update," officials said.
