A first-inning run didn't last long for the North Fort Myers Red Knights Sunday as Tampa Chamberlain rallied for three runs to advance in the Region 6A playoffs with a 3-1 victory.
The loss sends the Red Knights into the offseason after a 22-6 campaign and confident for next season as only two players graduate later this month.
Katelyn Kelly led off the game with a single. Marion Reed sacrificed her to second and Sarah Waitekus walked. After a wild pitch put the runners on second and third, Alynn Kayatta drove in the first run with a groundout.
Ida Baker senior Michael Shields (left) and Jordan Diggs earned medals Saturday at the State Class 3A track finals in Jacksonville.
Chamberlain tied the game immediately in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run. An error and a base hit led to Chamberlain's 2-1 lead when the next batter grounded out to second base, scoring an unearned run.
Chamberlain added to its lead in the third inning. A walk, a single and back-to-back sacrifice bunts produced the third run and Chamberlain held on to advance to the Region 6A-3 Finals.
Mackenzie Peterson allowed six base hits and struck out two in the loss for the Red Knights.
