Nature camp contest needs more entries

Due to a lack of sufficient entries, the deadline for entering the Adam Strongin Camp Scholarship essay contest has been extended.

Boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 13 are eligible to enter an essay and scholarship form to possibly win one of 10 paid scholarships to the Rotary Park's Eco Adventure Nature Camp for one week this summer, next winter or spring break camp.

"More than 500 scholarship forms were distributed at local schools, but the response has not been as much as expected to this point," said Strongin's stepfather Russell Krakow. "We're extending the deadline trying to get more essays turned in."

Youngsters who love the outdoors, fishing and little critters can pick up an essay scholarship form at Rotary Park, 5505 Rose Garden Road. Write a short essay on why you want to attend the camp. Submit them to Rotary Park as soon as possible since the scholarships are scheduled to be awarded by May 30.

The scholarships are offered through Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife by the Adam Strongin Camp Scholarship Fund.

The fund was created by the parents of Adam Strongin, 12, who lost his life in February in a tragic accident. The Gulf Middle School student played baseball and the Eco Adventure Nature Camp was his favorite camp to attend.

The camps run five days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Camp guides take campers through the preserve studying plants, bugs and other wildlife that inhabit the park with a different theme each day.
