Cape High, Ida Baker romp past Auburndale

Jose Valmana earned his second pitching win of the season Saturday as Cape Coral plunked Auburndale 13-3 in five innings.

The Seahawks broke the game wide open in the third inning by scoring six runs and tacked on six more in the fourth. Brandon Pryor and Terry Tates led the offense with three base hits apiece. Pryor doubled and drove in two runs and Jarid Lukaitis drove in a pair with a double in three at-bats.

Luke Spangler added two hits with one RBI and Kyle Arjona contributed two base hits.

The Seahawks (17-4) play Wednesday at North Fort Myers and face Island Coast Friday at Hammond Stadium in a preliminary game to the Fort Myers Miracle game that evening.

Ida Baker 13, Auburndale 6: Andres Fonseca led Ida Baker with three base hits, including two triples, and drove in three runs Saturday in the Bulldogs' victory over Auburndale.

Gabe Villaverde contributed a double among two hits and two RBI and Cameron Farmer drove in a pair of runs. The Bulldogs banged out a total of 11 base hits. Chris Schrowe (2-0) pitched three innings and struck out two while not allowing a run to earn the win.

The Bulldogs (6-12) play at Charlotte on Tuesday.

Mariner 20, East Lee County 0: Mariner coasted to a five-inning rout at East Lee County Friday night.

The Tritons scored eight runs in the first inning to set the tempo, added five in the second, four in the third and three more in the fourth to add to the runaway.

Michael Patton, Tim Watters and Brandon Speery each contributed two base hits on offense with Patton driving in two runs. Mason Eicher and Joey Morales tossed a combined no-hitter with Eicher (2-0) earning the win with fur strikeouts over three innings.

The Tritons (13-10) played at Charlotte on Tuesday.

Island Coast 4, DeSoto County 1: Joey Theune tossed five innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts as Island Coast beat DeSoto County Friday night.

Anthony Churlin connected for three base hits and Sam Malone drove in a run with an RBI double. The Gators sealed the victory with two runs in the sixth inning and added a fourth in the seventh.

The Gators (14-7) host Mariner on Thursday.


Hernando 5, Cape Coral 3: It took nine innings, but tournament favorite Hernando pulled out a victory in nine innings over Cape Coral Friday night in the first round of the Cape Coral/Mariner Tournament.

Mallory Gerrero, Kerry McLaughlin and Ally Slaughter each contributed two hits for the Seahawks. Makenzie Buss (12-5) absorbed the loss while striking out four batters.

The Seahawks (13-7) face St. John Neumann at noon on Saturday in the second round of the two-day tournament.

Lehigh 17, Mariner 3: Tournament host Mariner took one on the chin in the first round of their own invitational Friday night in a lopsided loss to Lehigh.

Abby Love had two hits, Lindsey Nelson doubled and Kaylyn Friday absorbed the loss for the Tritons.

Naples 7, North Fort Myers 0: On the heels of Thursday's 14-3 defeat at the hands of defending champion Miami Westminster, the Red Knights fared only slightly better Friday in a shutout loss to Naples in the Longshore Tournament.

Maddy White (5-1) was the losing pitcher for North Friday night as the Red Knights scored no runs on four hits against the Eagles. The Knights (18-4) host Ida Baker Tuesday in the District 6A-11 tournament semifinals.
