Gillions' blast powers Tritons to 16-3 win

Heather Gillions belted a grand slam home run and drove in five total runs Monday night to sent third-seeded Mariner to a 16-3 victory over Immokalee in the first round of the District 5A-12 softball tournament.

With the win the Tritons head to the semifinal round of the tournament against No. 2 seed Lely at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lely. Top seed Cape Coral faces Monday's winner between Golden Gate and Cypress Lake at 4:30 in the other semifinal matchup at Lely. The championship game is 7 p.m. Thursday at Lely.

Taylor Henderson, Lindsey Nelson and Felecia Rice each contributed two hits toward the Tritons' hit total of 12. They also took advantage of four walks.

The Tritons put the game out of reach right away with seven runs in the first inning. They tacked on four more in the third and struck for five runs in the fourth inning to engage the mercy rule.

Kaylyn Friday pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out two.
