PORT CHARLOTTE - Alex Wimmers hurled six scoreless innings and the Fort Myers Miracle churned out 18 hits in a 7-3 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs Monday night.
Wimmers (2-0) was stellar, allowing just one hit and striking out six in his first start of the season. After giving up a leadoff double to Tommy Coyle in the first inning, Wimmers set down the next 18 consecutively.
The Miracle provided Wimmers with plenty of offensive support and jumped on Stone Crabs starter Leonel Santiago in the top of the second. After retiring the first hitter, Santiago gave up three consecutive singles to Travis Harrison, Niko Goodrum and Levi Michael to load the bases. Jorge Polanco stepped up and laced a single to score a pair of runs and give the Miracle a 2-0 lead. Dalton Hicks added another run with a RBI double into the right field corner to score Michael.
In the fourth inning, Hicks delivered a run-scoring triple with a scorcher hugging the first base line. After a leadoff single by Michael, Hicks ripped a first pitch from Santiago (0-2). Michael raced home and the ball kicked off the wall down the right field line allowing Hicks to reach third with his first triple of the season.
The offense continued in the fifth with a pair of runs. Goodrum delivered a two-out RBI double and Hicks drew a bases loaded walk to bring in his third RBI of the game.
In the sixth, Mike Gonzales doubled off Stone Crabs reliever D.J. Slaton. After Stuart Turner and Max Kepler grounded out, Harrison doubled into right center to score Gonzales and push the Miracle lead to 7-0.
After starting the season 5-for-30, Harrison finished the night 5-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two more scored.
Hicks finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three runs batted in and reached base five times while Michael put up a 4-for-5 night with a double and two runs scored. Goodrum and Polanco were both 2-for-5. Polanco drove in a pair of runs and Goodrum knocked in one.
Justin O'Conner hit a three-run homer of Matt Tomshaw, who pitched the last three innings, with one out in the ninth to account for the Stone Crabs scoring.
The Miracle (7-4) return to Charlotte Tuesday for the second of a three-game series with the Stone Crabs (3-8).
