ST. LUCIE - Cam Maron walked off the St. Lucie Mets field with a run-scoring single in the 10th inning Saturday night to defeat the Fort Myers Miracle 5-4.
Miracle reliever Tim Shibuya entered the game in the 10th and was greeted by Brandon Nimmo's base hit, his third of the night. Shibuya (1-1) then walked T.J. Rivera. After getting Aderlin Rodriguez to pop up to second base, Maron laced a 1-0 pitch into right field to plate Nimmo and seal the Mets' victory.
After trailing 3-1, the Miracle took a brief 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth on a three-run homer by Adam Brett Walker. Facing Mets reliever Beck Wheeler with runners on the corners, Walker roped a drive down the left field line for his fourth home run of the season.
The Mets answered in the bottom of the eighth. Miracle reliever Steven Gruver gave up two singles to Dilson Herrera and Nimmo. Brian Gilbert then entered from the bullpen and struck out Rivera. A passed ball by catcher Tyler Grimes moved Herrera to third and Nimmo to second. Rodriguez then hit a grounder that skipped off the glove of Niko Goodrum. Jorge Polanco picked up the ball and recorded an out, but Herrera scored to tie the game 4-4.
Paul Sewald set the stage for Maron by working out of jams in the ninth and 10th innings. Sewald (1-0) stranded a pair of Miracle base runners in each inning.
Early in the game, Mike Gonzales gave the Miracle a 1-0 lead with a solo homer off Mets starter Michael Fulmer in the second inning. On a 1-1 pitch, Gonzales sent a screaming line drive over the fence in right field, his second home run of the season.
The Mets returned fire in the fourth, pushing across a run off Miracle starter Jose Berrios. After one out was recorded, Berrios issued a walk to Eudy Pina. Cole Frenzel singled to right and Pina raced to third. The next hitter, Phillip Evans, chopped a grounder to third base and beat out an attempted double play as Pina scored.
The Miracle (6-3) try to avoid the sweep by the Mets (5-4) on Sunday.
