To the editor:
An open letter to our Congressional candidates,
Opportunity is knocking at your doorstep. But between each knock, each pound on the door, the people of Southwest Florida find themselves wanting more and wanting better than the representation we may seem to be getting.
As we are all aware, on April 22 my fellow registered Republicans will have an important vote to decide on which candidate we feel will best represent our personal beliefs. But as we get closer to that vote, each afternoon I have now come to dread that long walk down my driveway to the mailbox. My only thought is what negative piece of advertisement will I find myself unfortunate enough to receive today.
As each campaign ad is delivered and read, seen on TV, or broadcasted over the internet and radio, the voters of Southwest Florida become more informed about what spin off or negative "flavor" of the week is than the actual issues that are affecting our area today. We see no solutions; we have no answers; just continued name calling and hate mail.
Is this what we are to expect if one of you are elected? Is this the type of behavior we as a people should expect from our elected officials?
It is time to stand as leaders in our community! Stand up for what you believe in! Explain and demonstrate to the people why we should vote for you, instead of showing us why we should not vote for the other candidate.
Don't just talk about change, BE that change we need. The people do not just deserve it, we are demanding it!
George Washington said, "If to please the people, we offer what we ourselves disapprove, how can we afterwards defend our work? Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair."
Be that standard and prove to the people that we can have a positive campaign experience. Prove to the people we can have a good elected official in congress representing Southwest Florida. Prove you are better than the negative rhetoric that has plagued our lives.
