The Jupiter Heammerheads defeated the Fort Myers Miracle 2-0 to avoid the series sweep at Hammond Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Jupiter starter Scott Lyman began the game retiring the first 13 hitters consecutively and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Lyman (1-0) allowed just two hits in shutout innings with a pair of walks and six strikeouts. Miracle left fielder Jonathan Murphy broke up the no-hit bid with a line drive into center to lead off the sixth.
Making his Miracle debut, starter Jose Berrios was tagged with the loss despite pitching six solid innings. Berrios (0-1), the No. 5 prospect in the Twins organization according to Baseball America, lasted six innings and gave up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
The Hammerheads picked up a run in the first inning. After Berrios retired the first two hitters, Austin Barnes singled through the left side. Then, Viosergy Rosa doubled to deep center field on a 1-0 pitch and Barnes scored to put Jupiter up 1-0.
In the fourth, Rosa led off with another double, this time to left center field. Matt Juengel singled off Berrios to put runners on the corners. Blake Barber then hit a ground ball to short. Jorge Polanco got the force out at second base, but Barber beat the throw to first and Rosa scored. Barber was credited with a run batted in.
The Jupiter bullpen closed the door after Lyman's strong start. James Nygren pitched a pair of perfect innings in the seventh and eighth. Joseph O'Gara recorded the final three outs in a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
Adam Brett Walker had a single in the ninth and has a hit in each of the first four games of the season. A.J. Pettersen went 1-for-4 with an outfield assist and Murphy finished 1-for-3.
The Miracle (3-1) are off on Monday, but return to action on Tuesday, April 8 to open a three game set with the Charlotte Stone Crabs (1-3).
