Five local businesses sponsor, build Habitat for Humanity homes

Over the past two months, construction on five new Habitat for Humanity homes has started in Lee County, with funding provided by local businesses. Chico's FAS Inc., FineMark National Bank and Trust, Office Furniture and Design Concepts, Raymond Building Supply and Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings continue their support of the housing ministry by donating the funds to build new homes for low-income Habitat partner families.

Employees of the companies, their families and friends have also volunteered their time to raise the walls and build the five homes. They work side by side with homeowner candidates and other volunteers to ready the homes for families in need.

"The partnership between Habitat and our local businesses is vital to the success of our program," said Sharon Thompson, Habitat board chair. "These companies are investing their money, time and energy in the future of our community. By sponsoring and building Habitat homes they are building hope for families in need."

Habitat homes are built through the use of volunteer labor and donations of money and materials. The homes are then sold to low-income families with an interest-free mortgage and monthly payments set at less than 30 percent of the homeowner's income, making homeownership an affordable reality. Habitat homeowners must qualify financially for the program; save $1,700 toward their closing costs; attend classes focusing on successful homeownership, budgeting and home maintenance; and complete 300 hours of "sweat equity" by volunteering at Habitat.
