Tritons survive Seahawks' tempo, 36-27

As expected Cape Coral controlled the tempo of the game in Friday night's District 5A-12 championship at Golden Gate.

The Seahawks' game plan, however, went for naught as the Mariner Tritons pulled out a 36-27 victory.

"In football terms, we did a good job of field position," said Tritons coach James Harris. "Our defense was good. Any time you hold a team scoreless in the third quarter you've played good basketball."

The Tritons outscored the Seahawks 7-0 in the third period to take a somewhat commanding lead and held on to claim their third straight district title.

"With Cape, you know each possession will be key to staying in the game," said Harris. "We didn't do a great job of dictating the tempo, but it was a good win for us."

The win means the Tritons (19-8) will host next week's Region 5A-3 quarterfinal game against Lemon Bay. The Seahawks (12-11) must go on the road for their first state playoff match.

Rodney Hunter and Kaleb Darrett tied for game-high scoring honors for the Tritons with 11 points apiece. Darrett added 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Joe Maserios and Marcus Blackwell led the Seahawks with nine points apiece.

"I'm proud of the guys because we overcame some adversity," said Harris. "Some of them have learned to play Mariner basketball."
