Richard Elmer Schmid, 75, a Cape Coral, resident for the last 12 years, formerly of Middleburg, Fla., passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, in Cape Coral. He was born June 12, 1938, in Mansfield, Ohio, to Elmer and Clara Schmid, now deceased.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a builder, a sailor and also a pilot. He was an adventurer and a free spirit who will be missed by all.

He is survived by three beloved children, Brian Schmid of Cocoalla, Idaho, Eric (Kerri) Schmid of Gambier, Ohio, and Margo (Mark) Gupton of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Herold of Mansfield; as well as seven grandchildren, two great=grandchildren with another on the way.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Merillyne Schmid.

Private memorial services with military honors will be held at a later date at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, Fla.

Memorial contributions in memory of Richard E. Schmid are suggested to Hope Hospice, 9470 Healthpark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
