February programs scheduled at Northwest Regional Library

Next month's roster of activities at Northwest Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

ADULT

Exhibit: Harry Potter's World

- Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine

Available during normal library operating hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10 a.m. 6 p.m.; Tuesday: Noon 8 p.m.; Friday, Saturday: 9 a.m. 5 p.m.

Millions of readers have followed Harry Potter to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This exhibit, created by the National Library of Medicine, explores Harry Potter's world and its roots in Renaissance magic, science and medicine.

English Caf

10:30 a.m., Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27

Practice English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

Nibbles and Novels

10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12

Enjoy a snack while chatting about books with other book lovers.

Book Discussion: "The Paris Wife" by Paula Mclain

2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19

"The Paris Wife" is a fictional account of the love affair between Ernest Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley. Follow Hadley through her six-year marriage to Ernest during the 1920s in Paris.

Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

9:30 a.m., Saturdays, Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22

10:30 a.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants. Registration is required.

The Science of Magic

6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4

Dress up as a favorite scientist or wizard and take part in a class at Hogwarts. Learn how to do science magic. Use knowledge of everyday phenomenon to make the seemingly impossible possible. Float on air, create fog and snow indoors and so much more. Glen Beitmen, Edison Wild Wizard will entertain and engage children of all ages. Everyone will enjoy the hands-on, fun science experiments and demonstrations. This program is provided in support of the Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine.

Family Storytime

10:30 a.m., Thursdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Heart to Heart

9 a.m. 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14 & Saturday, Feb. 15

Drop by our make-n-take table in the Kids Space and make a Valentine's Day card using hearts and other supplies.

CHILDREN

Reading Academy

4:30 p.m., Thursdays,

Feb. 6, 13, 20

Reading, spelling, puppets and games! Get a reading boost with this fun-filled program. For grades K-5. Children participating are expected to know how to read and write. Sponsored by the Friends of the Northwest Regional Library.

Kids Read Down Fines

10 a.m. noon, Saturdays, Feb. 8, 22

5 7 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb. 11, 25

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading, during the allotted time. A total of $8 per day may be earned. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only. Bring your library card with you. Your library card or library card number is required in order to access your account.

Heart to Heart

9 a.m. 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14 & Saturday, Feb. 15

Drop by our make-n-take table in the Kids Space and make a Valentine's Day card using hearts and other supplies.

Books-n-Bricks with Bricks4kidz

6 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18

Children will experience hands-on engineering fundamentals as they build motorized models (provided by the Bricks4Kidz organization) that coordinate with and enhance the fantastic stories presented by the library staff. Program is limited to 30 children in grades K-5. Registration is required.

Come Play with Us!

11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22

In the Musical Discovery Zone, kids interact with musicians from the Gulf Coast Symphony and get to play a variety of instruments. The program includes brief performances and a Q&A session. A great hands-on musical experience that's always a ton of fun!

TEEN

On the Table: Dollar Heart

Feb. 3 13

Available during normal library operating hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10 a.m. 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Noon 8 p.m.; Friday: 9 a.m. 5 p.m.

Learn to fold a dollar bill into a heart. Keep it for yourself or give it to a special friend. Don't have a dollar? Not to worry. Faux dollars will be provided.

Philosophy Club

3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6

Philosophy = the love of wisdom. Like philosophy? Don't know a lot about philosophy? Know a little but want to learn more? This is a student driven club where everyone is encouraged to participate.

Play Wii, board games, relay races or Minute to Win It. Participants choice. Join in the fun. Light snacks provided by the Friends of the Northwest Regional Library.

Let's Talk Books

4: 30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19

Watch book trailers and share favorite titles. What could be better than sipping hot chocolate, munching a great cookie and talking about great reads? Come on in and join the fun. Thanks to the Friends of the Northwest Regional Library for providing snacks.
