Island Coast tops Ida Baker

Balanced scoring carried Island Coast to a District 6A-11 Tournament victory over Ida Baker 42-37 Tuesday night.

The Gators were led by Leann Ellis with 16 points while three teammates contributed with eight points apiece to overcome the game-high 27 points of Ida Baker's Jessie Placher. Kate Goodwin, Jitia Jons and Jennifer Fasano scored eight apiece for the Gators with Goodwin pulling down 10 rebounds.

The fourth-seeded Gators (12-13) advance to Wednesday's semifinal round in the tournament at top-seeded Port Charlotte. No. 3 seed North Fort Myers travels to second-seeded Venice in the other semifinal match. The winners meet for the district title and regional playoff berths at 7 p.m. Friday on the higher remaining seed's home court.

Girls Soccer

Bishop Verot 6, Cardinal Mooney 1: Kelly Reynolds and Rielly McAloose knocked in two goals apiece to send Bishop Verot into the Region 2A-3 finals as a result of Tuesday's regional semifinal victory in Sarasota.

Rebecca Abernethy and Maddie Sarnac added the Vikings' other two goals on the night with Allison Oliva, Lauren Lockart, Abernethy and McAloose credited with single assists.

Goalkeeper Kinzie Frey made 18 saves to record the win. The Vikings (19-3-3) host Tampa Prep Friday night in the regional finals. Tampa Prep eliminated Holy Names 1-0 in double overtime Tuesday.

Boys Basketball

St. Pete Gibbs 74, Mariner 46: A long road trip to St. Petersburg was made much longer on the return trip Tuesday after Mariner sustained an lopsided beating at the hands of Gibbs.

Rodney Hunter topped the Tritons with 20 points and Isiaih Darrett contributed 11 points.

The Tritons (16-7) host East Lee County on Wednesday.

Baseball

Island Coast: Two Gators committed to colleges over the weekend. Nikko Rodriguez decided on Florence Darlington Tech in South Carolina and Anthony Churlin is heading to Central Florida.

Rodriguez hit .323 with two home runs and 17 RBI as a junior for the Gators. Churlin hit .292 with 13 RBI and 15 stolen bases as a freshman.

Both players played for Southwest Florida Baseball summer travel team.
