Health Care reform moves forward

January 16, 2014

To the editor:

I was very pleased to hear that Family Health Center of S.W. Florida is expanding in San Carlos. This is great evidence of the federal support recommended in the ACA to bring help to underserved communities. As I said previously in my opinion on Health Care Reform this will be welcomed, but much more needs to be done. The funding, training, and staffing will come.

There is evidence that PCMH, and benefits of other proposals (electronic medical records, patient health information technology, evidence based medicine) of reform has been welcomed by patients. However we need patients and communities to step up and support FHC. Not just to get health care but knowledge and even training to expand the base of care. It has been my observation that people are afraid or reluctant to step up because of possible repression from political opposition.

This same pressure of the opposition (in addition to misinformation) has caused people to not sign up for health insurance. Some are reluctant to receive or display information on the marketplace because they fear reprisal. I look forward to continued expansion of FHC into areas that have been deprived of care.
