Armed people are a free people

To the editor:

Recently the state of Connecticut began enforcing gun registration laws adopted by its legislature. This is disturbing to many gun owners and has been compared to the 1928 gun control laws of the German Weimar Republic.

In fact, the 1928 gun law in Germany was designed to disarm private armies, such as the Nazis, who were threatening the 10-year-old German democracy. It should be noted the German constitution provided the German people no right to bear arms.

Hitler and the Nazis did not gain power by means of armed revolt but rather by taking advantage of a people who were similar to today's "low information voter" and those who believe they are entitled to government redistribution of wealth. The democracy being so new, most Germans did not understand their rights under the constitution and its republican form of representational government. Hitler's political cunning was such that he gained power at the ballot box through a series of promises (how's that hope and change working out for you?) about programs supposedly to benefit the people.

Hitler's 1938 extension of the 1928 gun control law was for one reason only: to affect a facade of legalism around the exercise of naked power (can you say executive orders?) There was no wide-spread rebellion against governmental powers; in fact, Germans were still optimistic that Hitler would follow through on his promises, which were all lies.

It is all too easy to forget the seductive allure that fascism presented to all of the West, which was bogged down in economic and social problems (sound familiar?). What must be remembered is that Hitler and the Nazis were master manipulators of the German people's emotion and sentiment and were disdainful of people thinking for themselves. This is the danger to which we should pay great attention as we find our country presided over by such a manipulator and liar today.

So while it is disturbing that gun registration is becoming law, and certainly will not result in preventing more Sandy Hooks, what must be watched for is the sure-to-come assault on the 2nd Amendment. Had the citizenry in the 1770s not been able to keep and bear arms, there would be no United States of America.
