Island Coast rebounded from Friday's disappointing shooting performance and defeat at the hands of Suncoast to pin an 89-50 defeat on Donahue Academy Saturday in the consolation round of the Lehigh Medical Center Holiday Madness Tournament at East Lee County High.
Four Gators players scored in double figures in the win led by Sonel Mathurin with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Torian Thomas connected for 17 points, Morgan Foreman added 12 and Gabe Mohammad 10 points. Preston Grimm contributed with eight points, six rebounds, eight assists and five steals.
That effort was quite the opposite from Friday's 61-26 first-round loss in which the Gators hit just 10 of 56 field goal tries.
"We played a lot better (Saturday), but against a much less competitive opponent than Suncoast," said Gators coach Greg Coleman said.
The Gators play in the consolation bracket semifinal at 5 p.m. Monday against Dunbar. The tournament concludes on Tuesday.
Manatee 53, Cape Coral 34: Cape Coral fell behind early and never recovered in the second round of the Bradenton Christian Tournament Saturday, falling to Bradenton Manatee.
It is the second loss in the tournament for the Seahawks (5-7), who were led by Eric Martin with a team-high 10 points.
Bayshore 59, Cape Coral 50: Joe Maseros pitched in a game-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough to lead the Seahawks to victory Friday night in the Bradenton Christian Tournament.
Marcus Blackwell contributed with 10 rebounds for the Seahawks.
