North girls, Cypress boys win soccer titles

North Fort Myers claimed the Mariner Invitational girls soccer tournament overall championship Saturday with victories over LaBelle and Evangelical Christian.

The Red Knights (13-5) went 4-0 in the tournament to edge Ida Baker (17-0-2) for the title on fewer goals-against and points differential. The Bulldogs also went 4-0 in the tourney. Mariner took third place with Riverdale and Community School of Naples rounding out the top five. Island Coast placed seventh and Bishop Verot, who came into the tourney undefeated but went 2-2 with losses to Ida Baker and Mariner, placed ninth.

Ida Baker 4, ECS 2; Ida Baker 4, Barron Collier 1: Marcella Montoya and Roxe Fraser scored two goals apiece to lead the victory over ECS.

Fraser added two goals in the win over Barron Collier with Montoya and Franny Farella contributed single goals for the Bulldogs, who are idle until Jan. 6 when they travel to First Baptist Academy in Naples.

North Fort Myers 5, LaBelle 0; North Fort Myers 4, ECS 0: Saturday's two shutouts earned the Red Knights enough points differential to claim the overall title. They are idle until Jan. 8.

Ida Baker 3, Lemon Bay 0; Ida Baker 3, Bishop Verot 1: Ida Baker became the lone remaining Lee County undefeated soccer squad Friday with a victory over previously unbeaten Bishop Verot in the Tritons Invitational.

"It was a great team effort in both games," said Bulldogs coach Chris Vianest.

Marcella Montoya scored two goals to lead the Bulldogs past Lemon Bay in the opening match with Syniah Clark adding one goal.

Franny Farella, Roxe Fraser and Gabby Morales knocked in goals against the Vikings. Keeper Angela Christiano had no save opportunities in the first game and made five against Verot.

North Fort Myers 3, C.S. Naples 2; North Fort Myers 8, Lemon Bay 0: Darian Leschewski scored two goals in each game to lead North High past Community School of Naples and Lemon Bay Friday in the Tritons Invitational at Cape Coral Sports Complex.

Kelsie Pederson added one goal against CSN with keeper Coral Jarvis making eight saves.

Madison Lampkins scored two goals against Lemon Bay with Megan Richards, Nichols Paquin, Emma Berckman and Rachel Lapczynski each contributing one goal. Keeper Jacquie Scrivanich had just one save to preserve the shutout.

Cypress Lake (4-0) edged LaBelle (3-0-1) in the boys' title standings by a single point. Immokalee placed third with Mariner fourth and Barron Collier fifth.

Girls Basketball

Santa Slam at Oasis: Bayshore claimed the overall title in the Santa Slam tourney Saturday with a 42-30 victory over Estero.

Island Coast took third and Ida Baker fifth.

Jessie Placher poured in a career high 41 points in the Bulldogs' 59-39 fifth-place victory over Hardee County after tallying 27 points in a 78-36 loss to Bayshore earlier in the day. She also scored 30 in Friday's win over Estero

Oasis routed Hardee County 45-23 Friday night to advance in the Santa Slam tournament at Oasis.

Katie O'Connor led the Sharks (8-2), who played without leading scorer Jordan Westendorf, with 15 points. Samantha Wood contributed 11 points.

Placher, Samantha Wood of Oasis and Leanne Ellis of Island Coast were selected to the all-tournament team.
