City rivals in 1-0 duel

With about 15 minutes left to play, Ray Gerke steered home the lone goal Friday night in Mariner's 1-0 District 3A-3 soccer victory at Ida Baker.

Gerke's goal came on a low skidder from the top of the 18-yard box, one-on-one against the keeper.

Mariner goalkeeper Michael Laborde had two saves and Baker keeper Trey Crispin 11 saves.

Defenders Pat Keebler, Trevor Jurkowski, Jomar Restrepo, Isaias Velasquez and Austin Hobson provided outstanding middle defense against the Bulldogs(4-4-3). Meanwhile, the defensive crew of Alex Howard, Alex Crispin and reserve center-mid Joe DiBella contributed on the Bulldogs' behalf.

Mariner (9-1-2) hosts the Tritons Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Cape Coral 7, East Lee County 1: Camillo Avendano scored two goals and added two assists in Cape High's District 3A-13 victory at East Lee County Friday. Mateo Perez, Christopher Iturbe, Juan Alanso, Jonathan Jimenez and Kevin Retana contributed one goal apiece. Keeper Alex Collazo made five saves.

Cape Coral 5, Fort Myers 0: Freshman Kevin Retana scored two goals and Camillo Avendano added three assists to carry Cape Coral past Fort Myers Thursday night. Jonathan Jimenez, Miguel Martinez and Eli Vega each added one goal.

Bishop Verot 4, LaBelle 1: Tyler Yergens delivered a hat trick and Zachary Cloutier contributed the other goal in Bishop Verot's victory Thursday over LaBelle.

Boys Basketball

Golden Gate 43, Cape Coral 34: Eric Martin led Cape High with 11 points in a losing effort against Golden Gate Friday.

C.J. Lewis contributed eight points and Marcus Blackwell five rebounds for the Seahawks (5-4, 2-1 district).

Mariner 76, Cypress Lake 53: Rodney Hunter connected for a career-high 40 points Friday night as Mariner crushed Cypress Lake.

Kaleb Darrett pitched in 12 points for the Tritons, who were ahead by 32 points at one point.

Port Charlotte 63, Ida Baker 26: Port Charlotte outmatched Ida Baker Friday night en route to a 37-point victory. Nick Benvie topped the Bulldogs (3-6) with seven points.

Cape Coral 61, Cypress Lake 42: Joe Maseros got hot, pitching in a game-high 25 points Thursday night to lead Cape Coral to a sloppy win at Cypress Lake. Jovan Boyd contributed 12 points and Eric Martin eight.

Dunbar 56, Island Coast 52: Island Coast could not get over the hump at the end Thursday night despite double-figure scoring by Morgan Foreman (17) and Descota Hilliard (13) in a four-point loss to Dunbar.

Mariner 48, Immokalee 33: Kaleb Darrett knocked down a team-high 20 points to lead Mariner's win over Immokalee Thursday.

Girls Soccer

Ida Baker 6, Mariner 2: Gabby Morales and Franny Farella scored two goals apiece Friday night as Baker defeated Mariner.

Gabby Hallnan and Roxe Frazier each added one goal with goalkeeper Angela Christiano posting three saves for the Bulldogs (6-2).

Bishop Verot 7, LaBelle 0: Kelly Reynolds went one better than a hat trick Thursday night, scoring four times to lead Bishop Verot to victory.

North Fort Myers 3, Lemon Bay 0: Two goals by Darian Leschewski was all North Fort Myers would need Friday in a District 3A-13 win over Lemon Bay.

Girls Basketball

Cape Coral 51, Golden Gate 22: McKenna Beach poured in 20 points with Crystal Townsend adding 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead Cape Coral's victory Friday at Golden Gate. Samaria Jones contributed 12 rebounds and eight points .

Port Charlotte 81, Ida Baker 39: Jessie Placher scores a game-high 31 points, but got no help from her teammates Friday night in Ida Baker's loss to Port Charlotte. Kathleen Driscoll grabbed 13 rebounds for Baker (2-8).

Cape Coral 67, Cypress Lake 41: McKenna Beach pitched in a game-high 27 points to go with 10 steals in leading Cape Coral to a District 5A-12 win Thursday. Crystal Townsend contributed a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Mariner 49, Immokalee 31: Grace Waller pitched in 16 points Thursday night to lead Mariner to its first district victory of the season at Immokalee.
