Slow start costs Gators in opener

Held to just 11 points in the first half, Island Coast couldn't climb out of the abyss and lost its season-opening game Thursday night at East Lee County 59-40.

Morgan Foreman led the Gators with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Kendall Sawyer topped all scorers with 22 points and Junior Tarin added 20 for the Jaguars.

The Gators (0-1) tackle Gulf Coast at 8:30 p.m. next Friday in Island Coast's Turkey Shootout.

Lehigh 67, Ida Baker 43: Derrick Loza pitched in 23 points to go with four rebounds in Baker's loss at Lehigh Thursday night.

Kevin Acevedo contributed 16 points for the Bulldogs.

Oasis 65, Seacrest 25: Oasis more than doubled up Seacrest Thursday night behind the double-figure scoring of Owen Roos with 17 points and Alex Welch with 16 points.

Steve Staniec added nine points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Sharks (1-1), who visit Estero Friday night.

Girls Basketball

Cape Coral 67, Riverdale 24: Julia Ramsey connected for 19 points to help propel Cape Coral to victory Thursday night at Riverdale.

McKenna Beach added 17 points for the Seahawks ( 5-1), who host East Lee County Monday night.

Mariner 34, Palmetto Ridge 27: Mariah Ortiz tallied 12 points to help lead Mariner to victory Thursday night over Palmetto Ridge.

Pharrah Milan added seven points while Jorie Lynch contributed eight rebounds and Kiera Batemay six rebounds to go with three steals and two blocked shots.

The Tritons (3-2) play Friday night at Oasis.

Oasis 51, Seacrest 19: Jordan Westendorf delivered a triple double Thusday night to lead Oasis to victory at Seacrest.

Westendorf pitched in 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and was credited with 10 steals. Samantha Wood had a game-high 18 points to go with five assists.

The Sharks (2-1) host Mariner Friday night.

Girls Soccer

Bishop Verot 8, LaBelle 0: Kelly Reynolds and Katie Sullivan combined for five goals Thursday night to carry Bishop Verot past LaBelle.

Reynolds finished with three goals and Sullivan two with Becca Abernethy, Kerry Waldron and Lauren Lukasik each adding one goal.

The Vikings (6-0-2) play Tuesday at Clewiston.

Boys Soccer

Bishop Verot 0, LaBelle 0 (tie): Bishop Verot's unblemished season record was dinged up Thursday night by a scoreless tie at LaBelle.

Goalkeeper Ricardo Martinez made six saves to preserve the tie for the Vikings (4-0-1), who host Clewiston on Tuesday.
