Despite a push by Charlotte in the final minutes of the game, the FGCU women's basketball team picked up its third consecutive victory 78-73 Wednesday night at Alico Arena.
With the win, the Eagles are 3-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season. The 49ers fall to 1-3.
After staring at a 7-0 deficit, the Eagles responded to take control. The Eagles were challenged several times, but never relinquished the lead. In a scoring frenzy that ended the game, the Eagles outscored the 49ers 17-14 in the final four minutes to seal the five-point win.
"It's a really good win for us," said Eagles coach Karl Smesko. "The level of competition for us just jumped up. We were able to make enough plays in the second half to win. In that last four minutes we saw great plays from Steph Haas and Whitney (Knight). We hit a couple of big shots in that last few minutes and that was really the difference."
The Eagles were led by four double-digit scorers. Sophomore Stephanie Haas led with a career-high 19 points, senior Sarah Hansen added 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Knight and Jenna Cobb chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively.
After two days off, the Eagles travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., Saturday to face Southern Mississippi.
