To the editor:
Let's start off by dismissing the myth that the CRA was reorganized for a lack of funds. The reason was personal and politically motivated. The board members were dismissed in a very unprofessional manor without even a thank you for the many years of free service to the city.
One year since the city took over the CRA, they are still paying approximately $60,000 for an office they don't use. The office building the CRA owns on Lafayette Street. That is also not being used for the community.
Then we come to the resource center (old Fire Station 1). The CRA spent $80,000 to rehab it for use of the community at large. The city staff promised it would be staffed for permitting and a host of government services. The police department has quietly taken it over for its exclusive use. They store such valuable items as a horse trailer and a street line painter in the garage. The police department owes the CRA $80,000.
Did you know that Cape Coral is the only CRA in any large city that does not have full-time paid executive director and staff? Even little Fort Myers has a director and staff. This is probably why the CRA has not announced one new improvement to the district.
I would like to conclude with the question, "What is the CRA doing with all of the money they claim to be saving??
