To the editor:
As we watch our government shutdown, and both parties placing blame on their opposite, we feel that no one is coming to the table to negotiate.
But as the media focuses on the finger pointing, they are not focusing on the secret negotiation behind the scenes. I am referring, of course, to the negotiations being spearheaded by Congressmen Ron Kind (D-WI) and Charlie Dent (R-PA).
I am sure you didn't hear of this, so let me fill you in. Congressman Kind, who is a key leader of the moderate wing of the House Democrats, has begun behind-the-scenes negotiations with House Republicans in order to solve this shutdown fiasco.
This coalition of about 40 Democrats and Republicans, met in secret without permission from their Leadership, and have come forward with a compromised CR.
The new CR will fund the Federal Government for six-months (much longer than the six-weeks of previous CRs). The CR itself does not defund or delay ACA (or "Obamacare" as it's called pejoratively). Instead, it repeals the medical device tax in ACA, a tax that both Democrats and Republicans have agreed was a poor move, as it stifles health care research and increases costs.
This is a compromise that I believe both sides can agree on. If Majority Leader Harry Reid refuses to bring this to the table, and if President Obama refuses to sign, than at that point, we will know they are being the unreasonable ones. Similarly, if Speaker Boehner refuses to bring it up, we will know that he is being unreasonable.
