Southwest Florida Yachts moves to Cape Coral, celebrates 30 years

Southwest Florida Yachts will enter its 30th year of continuous service at a new location.

The business has relocated to Tarpon Point Marina at 6095 Silver King Blvd. in Cape Coral, near mile marker 92. The company is continuing its "free cruising days" charter promotion while growing its charter fleet of powerboats and sailboats.

The company moved here a few weeks ago.

Barb Hansen, co-owner of the firm, power/sailing school and brokerage, said moving to a prime location in the Cape and consolidating its operations is the perfect way to celebrate and offer better service to its clients.

"We consolidated our sailboats from Burnt Store and our powerboats from Marina Town in North Fort Myers," Hansen said. "It consolidates our resources in one place. We don't have to travel back and forth and our customers can come to one location."

The new marina features a dedicated facility for Hansen's companies, a ship's store, boat and fishing charters, eco-guided tours, boat/kayak rentals and much more.

It is located in a sheltered, deep-water harbor which offers easy access to the Gulf of Mexico.

"It's modernized, it has a fuel dock. The facility has the promenade, with a row of shops and restaurants in addition to the hotel and Pincher's, which will be going in as well next month," said Hansen. "The Dockmaster moved out so we have more space and our offices are in one location."

Customers will also have access to a pool, fitness room, showers and more, Hansen said, which makes it nice for those who live outside Florida or are from another country.

The new location is home to the Westin Cape Coral Hotel. The seaside community also offers single-family residences within Tarpon Estates and condominium homes at Tarpon Landings.

Hansen said the "Free Cruising Days" promotion, which started last year and has run continuously since then, will continue through 2014.

Charter customers booking cruises three days or longer between Dec. 15 and April 30 will earn one free cruising day. Three-day or longer charters for the rest of the year will earn two free cruising days.

Hansen and her husband, Vic, began the firm in 1984 (Vic had been managing it since 1981). The current charter fleets includes 10 power yachts from 32- to 50 feet and sailing fleet of five yachts.

Hansen said Southwest Florida Yachts can charter anybody anywhere within a 70-mile radius of its new location, from Venice to Marco Island, even to the east coast.

And for many, who don't want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to use a vessel for a few days, chartering makes more sense.

"Chartering makes sense as opposed to buying with the maintenance and insurance, depending on how you're going to use it," Hansen said. "How many boats do you see that just sit? That's where charting is more cost effective."
