Bishop Verot used a strong running game to overwhelm Doral Academy 45-14 at Vikings Stadium Friday night.
The Vikings racked up 400 rushing yards, and scored five rushing touchdowns using four different running backs to do so. They scored first, driving down to the Firebirds 5-yard line in nine plays before settling for a 24-yard field goal.
Later in the quarter they capitalized on an interception by Jacob Bowlin, and a pass interference call against Doral. Quinn Farrell hit C.J. Spiro, who was wide open on the right side of the end zone for the only passing touchdown for Verot.
"I ran a 'Y-corner' route and got a good release from the defenders," Spiro said. "Farrell threw me a great ball to catch."
The Viking bottled up the Firebirds until early in the second quarter when Andres Pineda broke through the front line and outran the secondary for a 41-yard touchdown.
Leslie Green scored Verot's second TD. However, two other drives were unsuccessful when Verot kicker Weston Cole hit only one of three field goals in the first half.
In the second half, Steve Brown added a rushing touchdown, and the Vikings led 24-7. Meanwhile, they again seemed to stymie the Firebirds offense. Twice they stopped Doral and it looked like they would do it again. Facing third-and-17, Firebirds QB Adrian Fernandez threw a bomb to Andy Magliano, who was behind all defenders. He ran 72 yards for the score.
That brought the Firebirds within 24-14 and could have been disheartening to the Vikings. Instead, they responded well to the adversity. They started their next drive at their own 5, and took 16 plays, more than seven minutes off the clock, and went 95 yards for the touchdown. The final eight were covered by Green, who scored his second TD of the night.
Green had a second great game rushing. After amassing 270 yards last week, he logged 188 against Doral. Unfortunately, he was injured with eight minutes left in the game, and did not return.
"We will wait and see about Leslie," said Verot coach Phil Dorn. "He will be evaluated tomorrow. I'm very proud of his development this year to earn a starting position. We hope he can join us again."
Luke Kane and Jimmy Dwyer added rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the final score. Spiro had another outstanding night, with six catches for 125 yards.
Overall, the Vikings had 591 yards of total offense to the Firebirds' 236. Three plays accounted for 156 of those yards.
"We have to keep focus and not give up those big plays." said Dorn. "Even with those plays, I was happy that our defense held them to two scores."
For the first time in three weeks, the weather did not play a factor in the game. Verot hosts LaBelle next week for their annual homecoming game.
