Seahawks fall in straight sets

There wasn't much to celebrate Monday night after the Cape Coral Seahawks dropped a straight-set volleyball match to Port Charlotte 25-13, 25-23, 25-20.

Katie Upton handed out 12 assists and Carly Vilardi delivered five kills to lead the Seahawks (2-3), who host Immokalee Tuesday night.

Barron Collier 3, Bishop Verot 0: Bishop Verot had a long, quiet bus ride home from Naples Monday after a straight-set loss to the Cougars 25-20, 25-23, 25-18.

Coach Jeremy Ridgeo praised his team for its defense and serve/receive play. Alena Hernandez came through with a team-high 19 digs while Lauren Homolka and Christine Muelles each contributed eight digs.

The Vikings (2-2) host Gateway Tuesday night.

Oasis 3, First Baptist 1: The trio of Emma Nelson, Jordan Westendorf and Larra Bickelhaupt led Oasis to a 28-18, 22-25, 25-10, 25-18 win Monday night.

Nelson handed out 22 assists to go with eight service aces, Westendorf made four blocks with nine kills and Bickelhaupt added three aces and nine kills. The Sharks (7-1) host Bishop Verot Thursday night.

Shark Invitational: Ida Baker claimed third place in the tournament at Oasis Saturday.

Devon Ramey (6 kills, 3 aces) led the Bulldogs past Immokalee 25-13, 25-16, 25-19 with backing from Amanda Gross (5 kills, 4 aces, 2 blocks) and Tiffany Wood (20 assists, 3 aces).

The Bulldogs battled back after dropping the first two games only to fall to Southwest Florida Christian 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 15-10. Amanda Gross (8 kills, 4 aces, 9 blocks) and Ashley Vargas (6 kills, 7 blocks, 7 digs) led the charge.

The Bulldogs defeated Island Coast 25-17, 25-17, 25-13 in the third-place game. Machaela Sheffield led the attack with 6 kills, 4 aces. Gross (6 kills, 6 blocks, 7 digs) and Vargas (5 kills) contributed to the victory.

The Bulldogs play Tuesday night at Port Charlotte.
