PORT CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte Stone Crabs swept the Fort Myers Miracle in a doubleheader Wednesday at Charlotte Sports Park by scores of 2-1 in nine innings and 6-0 in seven innings.
In game 1, Drew Vettleson singled to left field with two outs in the ninth to score Willie Argo and give the Stone Crabs a 2-1 walk-off win.
Matt Tomshaw limited the Crabs to one run on six hits over eight innings. He struck out five.
In the ninth, Argo reached on a single against Chad Rodgers. Richie Shaffer then grounded a ball to third that Stephen Wickens booted to put runners at first and second. Rodgers induced a 6-4-3 double play ball from Segovia, but Vettleson was able to end the game when his flare down the left field line landed just out of the reach of J.D. Williams, allowing Argo to score easily from third.
The Miracle took a 1-0 lead off of Crabs starter Grayson Garvin in the fourth. Byron Buxton singled to start the frame and moved to second on a sac bunt from A.J. Pettersen. Buxton then stole third and came home on an RBI sac fly by Wickens.
The Crabs scraped a run across Tomshaw in the sixth. With one out, Taylor Motter singled to left. Motter stole second and scored on a single to right by Jake Hager. After Tomshaw walked Argo, he recovered to retire the last eight batters he faced.
Buxton went 2-for-3 with two singles and walk. He extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
In game 2, Crabs starter Jared Mortensen, who was making his first start since being signed from an independent ball team earlier this month, pitched a complete game two-hit shutout.
Mortensen gave up doubles to D.J. Hicks and Jairo Rodriguez but that was all.
The Crabs roughed up Miracle starter Manuel Soliman for four runs, three earned, in his five innings.
Alejandro Segovia and Jeff Malm hit back-to-back doubles in the second to give the Crabs a 1-0 lead. Luke Bailey then drove Malm in with a single.
Shaffer collected one of his two RBI with a single in the third. He belted an RBI ground ruled double in the fifth to put the Crabs up 4-0.
The Crabs collected two runs on three hits off of Corey Williams in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Buxton saw his 13-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0 for 3 game.
The Miracle (71-52, 26-30) and Stone Crabs (62-60, 33-22) conclude their regular season series Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
