Fitness lovers of all ages are invited to don their favorite sneakers and workout gear Saturday, Sept. 7, to participate in a Zumbathon to benefit Sweet Magnolias Coffee House & Marketplace, a downtown Cape Coral nonprofit that supports single mothers and their children.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the Zumba classes from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. The Zumbathon will also feature food from Sweet Magnolias' gourmet caf, live music and a bounce house, fashion show and Chinese auction. Sweet Magnolias is at 909 S.E. 47th Terrace. The free event is sponsored by the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Abbey Services In-Home Care for Seniors, The Martel Agency and the Brickhouse Cardio Club. Information is available by calling (239) 939-9991.
The high-energy event is being held to raise awareness and funds for Sweet Magnolias, which helps single mothers in Cape Coral with much-needed diapers, daycare scholarships, life skills training and vocational training.
Debbie Legg and her husband, Allen, opened Sweet Magnolias this year as part of the Net Community Foundation, a nonprofit they started two years ago to minister to single moms. The coffee shop offers gourmet coffee drinks all day, pastries and bagels for breakfast and homemade soups, salads and sandwiches at lunch. The marketplace features handmade furniture and crafts including clothing, candles, handbags and leather journals made by artist and single mothers locally and in Haiti.
Part of the proceeds from sales is used to help single moms with immediate needs. The marketplace also hosts support groups, life skills classes and vocational training for single moms. Volunteers provide most of the help in the shop and are always needed.
Sweet Magnolias is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays during special events. Anyone who wants to provide financial support can send donations to The Net Community Foundation, PO Box 151015, Cape Coral FL 33915. For more information, call (239) 245-1794.
