The three-time defending Atlantic Sun champion FGCU men's soccer team was picked as the top conference team by the league head coaches in the preseason poll that was unveiled Thursday.

The Eagles were voted first by a staggering seven votes in the A-Sun poll, above previously top ranked ETSU which only received one first-place vote this season. Mercer, who took third in the poll, also received a single first place vote.

FGCU also secured three spots on the 12-man Preseason All-Conference squad with three sophomores on the list. Last year's A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Felipe DeSousa, joined defender Aaron Guillen, and midfielder Rodrigo Saravia. DeSousa led the league with five game-winning goals last season for the Eagles, while he racked up 15 points with seven goals.

Finishing the season with an 11-5-2 overall record, the Eagles entered the 2012 A-Sun Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed after posting a 6-1-1 mark in league action. Having already secured three regular season championships, the Green and Blue went on to claim their second straight A-Sun Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in the program's second season of eligibility.

Welcoming back 15 players from last year's championship squad, the Eagles open the season with a trip to Tampa to face the Bulls of USF on Aug. 30 at 8 p.m.

The 2013 home opener with FIU is slated for 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
