JUPITER - The Jupiter Hammerheads scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 3-2 over the Fort Myers Miracle Monday night.
Ryan Fisher lined a a single off Miracle reliever Zack Jones with the bases loaded to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs.
Tyler Duffey began the eighth on the mound for the Miracle with a 2-0 lead and recorded two quick outs. Then, Brent Keys singled up the middle and Austin Nola hit a bouncer through the left side to put runners on the corners. Alfredo Lopez then hit a grounder up the middle that he beat out for an infield hit and scored Keys. After Duffey (3-5) plunked MLB rehabber Casey Kotchman to load the bases, manager Doug Mientkiewicz called on Jones to face Fisher. On a 1-0 pitch, Fisher deposited a two-run base hit into right field to score Nola and Lopez.
Reliever Nick Wittgren entered in the ninth inning for the Hammerheads and posted a perfect frame with a pair of strikeouts for his 22nd save.
Miracle starter Jason Wheeler handed the game to the bullpen after pitching seven splendid innings. Wheeler was perfect through the first four innings and allowed just two hits, both to Kotchman, with 10 strikeouts.
Wheeler inherited a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Kennys Vargas launched his 18th homer of the season. After a D.J. Hicks single, Vargas took a 1-2 pitch from Jupiter starter Angel Sanchez over the wall in right field for a two-run shot.
Sanchez pitched five innings and allowed just the two runs on the Vargas homer while scattering nine hits. James Nygren improved to 7-3 after recording the final out in the eighth inning.
