Buxton homers, but Miracle fall 10-4

Rogers gives up six runs in five innings

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees beat the Fort Myers Miracle, 10-4, at Space Coast Stadium Tuesday evening.

The Manatees roughed up Miracle starter Taylor Rogers in the middle innings. In the fourth, Brevard County sent eight batters to the plate, scoring four runs and had RBI hits from Cameron Garfield, Greg Hopkins and Ben McMahan.

In the fifth, Mitch Haniger hit his second home run of the series. Haniger's two-run homer extended the Manatee lead to 6-2.

After Byron Buxton tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, the Manatees answered with a four-run eighth inning off Miracle reliever Chad Rodgers. Hopkins and Lance Roenicke delivered RBI hits and D'Vontrey Richardson knocked in a pair with a two-out single.

Buxton hit his first over-the-wall home run and second of the season in the ninth, but Manatee reliever Tommy Toledo retired the side to secure the win for Brevard County.

The Miracle jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Manatee starter Cody Scarpetta. After Scarpetta walked the bases loaded with one out, Matt Koch singled to left to plate two runs.

Koch finished 2-for-4. Buxton ended the night 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base to go along with the home run and triple. Stephen Wickens and D.J. Hicks were each 2-for-3.

Rogers (8-4) went five innings and gave up six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Manatee right-hander Mark Williams went 4.1 innings in relief of Scarpetta to pick up the win. Williams (4-0) allowed just three hits and struck out three.

The Miracle face Brevard County in the series finale today at 6:35 p.m.
