DUNEDIN - The Dunedin Blue Jays defeated the Fort Myers Miracle 6-3 Friday night.
The Miracle took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With one out, Kennys Vargas singled through the right side. Matt Koch then doubled off Dunedin starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx and Vargas scored from first.
Koch's RBI would be the only run pushed across against the Blue Jays hurler. Bibens-Dirkx (6-3) went five innings and scattered five hits with only one run allowed.
In the bottom of the second, Marcus Knecht launched a 2-0 pitch from Miracle starter Manuel Soliman over the left field fence. The Blue Jays loaded the bases and Shane Opitz drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to give Dunedin a 3-1 lead.
The Blue Jays added three more runs in the seventh off Miracle reliever Steven Gruver. Making his first appearance in the Florida State League, Gruver faced eight hitters in the seventh inning and gave up a two-run homer to K.C. Hobson and a run-scoring single to Opitz.
Down 6-1, the Miracle picked up a run in the eight on an RBI single from D.J. Hicks and another in the ninth on an RBI base hit from J.D. Williams. Despite allowing a pair of runs, Blue Jay reliever Ajay Meyer recorded the final six outs and the Miracle fell 6-3.
Aderling Mejia went 3-for-4 with three singles to raise his season average to .342. Matt Tomshaw pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Tyler Jones made his Miracle debut recording four outs without allowing a run.
Soliman (1-4) lasted four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
