JUPITER - The Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the Fort Myers Miracle 4-3 Monday afternoon.
Cardinals starter Kyle Hald allowed two early runs, but retired the last 17 he faced consecutively. The Miracle broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning when Aderling Mejia tripled off the left field wall with a runner on. Stephen Wickens then followed with an RBI groundout to second to plate Mejia.
Hald would not allow another base runner and the Palm Beach offense chipped away at the Miracle lead. After four scoreless innings to start the game, Miracle starter Matt Tomshaw gave up a one-out, run-scoring double to Colin Walsh to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the seventh, the Cardinals took the lead on an RBI fielder's choice from Nick Longmire and a two-out, run-scoring double from Starlin Rodriguez. Tomshaw (2-3) left after 6 2/3 innings with three runs allowed on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Casey Rasmus added an RBI single for Palm Beach in the eighth off Miracle reliever Adrian Salcedo. Ronnie Shaban pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his 10th save.
Mejia finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and one batted in.
Hald (3-6) went eight innings and gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
The Miracle (48-24, 3-2) finish the series with the Cardinals (31-42, 2-3) Tuesday night with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. Top prospect Byron Buxton is expected to make his Miracle debut.
