FORT MYERS - The Brevard County Manatees blasted three solo home runs and hung on to beat the Fort Myers Miracle 3-2 on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.
All three home runs by the Manatees came against Miracle starter Jason Wheeler, who took the loss. Wheeler lasted six innings and struck out five.
Mitch Haniger started the home run parade when he led off the third with a jack. Cameron Garfield belted another solo shot in the fifth and Lance Roenicke made it 3-0 with a long ball in the sixth.
Miguel Sano put the Miracle on the board in the bottom half of the sixth when he launched his Florida State League-leading 14th home run. Sano also scored in the eighth on a sac fly from Angel Morales to cut the Manatees' lead to 3-2.
The Miracle had a chance to send the game to extra innings or rally for the win in the ninth. After reliever Tommy Toledo got the first two outs, Levi Michael singled to right. He stole second with Eddie Rosario at the plate and Toledo ended up walking Rosario to bring Sano to the plate. However, Toledo buckled down to strike out Sano looking on a 1-2 fastball on the outside corner.
Jed Bradley earned the win for the Manatees. The No. 5 Milwaukee Brewers' prospect according to MLB.com, gave up just the solo homer to Sano in his six innings of work. He struck out three and allowed just three hits.
Ryan O'Rourke worked two scoreless innings out of the Miracle bullpen and Zack Jones pitched a perfect ninth in the losing effort.
