Cape Coral Fire Department personnel responded to a commercial structure fire at the Island Cove Condominiums this morning at 6:30 a.m. at 1789 Four Mile Cove Parkway.

According to a report from the city of Cape Coral, the response and call for fire services was initiated by the automatic sprinkler and fire alarm systems located throughout the condominium facilities.

The fire was located in a second floor unit and was contained in the kitchen area.

First arriving engine companies reported the fire was contained and extinguished with the assistance of the sprinkler system installed in the complex.

One resident sustained moderate to severe burns, according to the report. The patient was first taken to a local hospital and then transported to the regional Burn Center at Tampa General.

The fire caused two condominium units to be declared uninhabitable, and two families have been displaced. Both families have secured lodging locally with family and friends.

The fire is under investigation by the Cape Coral Fire Department and the Florida State Fire Marshal.
