May 22, 2013
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Sweet Magnolias Coffee House & Marketplace, a downtown Cape Coral shop whose sales support single mothers, will have its official grand opening celebration from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, May 25. The 2,200-square-foot coffee shop is located at 909 S.E. 47th Terrace.

The event is free to the public and will feature live music, a photo booth, a chocolate fountain and face painting for children. Sweet Magnolias will also launch a new menu featuring gourmet coffee drinks available all day, fresh bagels and homemade pastries in the mornings and homemade soups, salads and sandwiches for lunch.

"We are so excited to welcome everyone who has been supporting us since we opened the marketplace side of the shop in early April, and invite the public to come in and celebrate with us," said founder and owner Debbie Legg.

Legg and her husband formed The Net Community Foundation a couple of years ago to raise money to help struggling single mothers in Cape Coral, then expanded the ministry to the coffee shop and marketplace this year. The marketplace features handmade furniture and crafts including clothing, candles, handbags and leather journals made by artist and single mothers locally and in Haiti.

Part of the proceeds from sales at Sweet Magnolias will be used to provide daycare scholarships, and the coffeehouse will become a hub for support groups, life skills classes and vocational training for single moms. Legg said the long-term goal is to have a trade school at the shop where women could learn skills such as cooking, baking, sewing and business.

Legg is always looking for volunteers to work in the coffee house and marketplace, including teenagers who need community service hours. Anyone interested in helping can call Sweet Magnolias at 239-245-1794.

Sweet Magnolias Coffee House and Marketplace is owned and operated by The Net Community Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides assistance to single mothers in Cape Coral.
