Canterbury broke open a close game with a seven-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday night to conquer Oasis 8-1 in the District 3A-11 Tournament.
Alex Rabinowitz slugged a double down the third base line with one out and the bases loaded to spark the Cougars into a 3-1 lead en route to the victory at Rutenberg Park.
"That double down the line was the killer," said Sharks coach Frank Haba. "We kind of fell apart after that. There was a fly ball that fell in, but should have been caught and things like that."
The Cougars scored seven runs in the inning around five of their six hits, two walks and one error by the Sharks.
Garrett Graber pitched five sparkling innings for the Sharks, allowing just two hits with one strikeout while walking two. After facing the first three batters in the sixth, Graber (3-6) was pulled in favor of Daniel Korchick, who walked a batter to load the bases ahead of Rabinowitz's game-winning double.
"We had the most wins ever in school history (eight)," said
Haba. "We only had three wins last year, so we are moving in the right direction."
The Sharks (8-17) were seeking their first district playoff victory in school history, but that will have to wait until perhaps next year.
Canterbury advances in the 3A-11 tournament to face the winner between C.S. Naples and Moore Haven Tuesday in the semifinal round.
The district championship will be played Thursday at Naples Seacrest Academy.
