Baserunning mistakes wound up costing Island Coast a chance to advance in the District 6A-13 softball tournament.
"You've got to do the fundamentals better than the other team to win games," said Gators coach Tim Loughren. "I will say the girls never quit tonight. We just made a couple too many mistakes."
The mistakes proved fatal as the No. 4 seeded Gators lost to fifth-seed South Fort Myers 7-6 in eight innings at Ida Baker. The Gators had beaten the Wolfpack twice during the season, both one-run games.
The Gators had one runner tagged out overrunning the bag while stealing third. Another runner was thrown out at home plate.
The Wolfpack turned the tables Tuesday night, grabbing a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning that they would never relinquish.
The Gators (6-17) came back to tie the game at 3-3 with two unearned runs in the fourth. Both tallies scored with two outs on a South fielding error.
South regained a two-run advantage in the top of the sixth, but again the Gators tied it with a pair in their half of the inning. Kati McDonnell laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first, but continued on to third base on a wild throw. She scored on a wild pitch. Lexi Perry later walked and scored the tying run.
Not to be outdone, the Wolfpack scored a go-ahead run in the seventh when Megan Noble reached on one of the Gators' three defensive errors on the night.
Olivia Lugo started the Gators' final score-tying rally in the seventh with a leadoff double. After stealing third, Lugo scored on Kennedy Adams' single to left. Adams was thrown out at second base trying to stretch the hit into a double. That could have cost the Gators the winning run when two batters walked after two were out and the game went to the eighth.
Brittney Gavin walked to start the winning rally for the Wolfpack. She went to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored with two out on McKenzie Mikar's triple.
Again, the Gators set themselves up for a rally when Darion Martin stroked a leadoff single to left and went to second on a wild pitch. Jen Fasano walked, but straying off the base too far on Micki Kelley's line shot back to the pitcher that started a double play on Fasano. Lugo popped up to third base to end the game.
The Wolfpack advances to the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday against No. 1 seed Fort Myers. Tournament host and No. 2 seed Ida Baker takes on No. 3 Riverdale in the other semifinal at 7 p.m.
The championship game is 7 p.m. Friday at Baker.
