The Fort Myers Miracle continued their record-setting start to the 2013 season Monday by extending their winning streak to 11 games with a 4-1 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals at Hammond Stadium.
The 11-0 start is the best in Miracle history. The Miracle will now set their sights on the longest overall winning streak in their history. They can match that record of 12 wins in a row on Tuesday when they host the Palm Beach Cardinals at 2:35 p.m. The game is by Florida Gulf Coast hosting the Florida Gators.
Monday's game was a pitcher's duel in which Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen came out on top. Stuifbergen was masterful, pitching 7 2/3 inning without allow an earned run. He scattered four hits, didn't issue any walks and struck out three to earn his first win.
After four scoreless innings, the Miracle struck with three consecutive singles from the bottom of the order. Jhon Goncalves reached on an infield singe and moved to third when Kyle Knudson's base hit bounced off third baseman Matt Williams' glove. Stephen Wickens then drove Goncalves in with a single to left.
Knudson scored later in the inning on a sac fly from Eddie Rosario to make it 2-0.
Stuifbergen was cruising until the eighth. He gave up an infield single to Williams in the eighth and Williams advanced to second when Miguel Sano threw wildly to first. With two outs, Stuifbergen allowed a hit to James Ramsey that plated Williams to make it 2-1. The run was unearned, but Stuifbergen was lifted from the game.
The Miracle added two more insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI triple by Goncalves and an RBI single by Knudson.
Corey Williams induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and pick up his fourth save.
