A lottery could help pay off the national debt

To the editor:

What with the popularity of gambling what it is throughout the world and our country in particular, I cannot for the life of me understand why we do not at least try to "lottery" away our national debt of the $16 trillions of dollars so often thrown into our faces by our oh-so-many bureaucrats and governmental parasites who constantly sup at our national and local treasuries.

If we as a people love to gamble as we do, why not take advantage of that "sin" and make it do something beneficial for us all? It certainly couldn't harm anything, and while we're at it, what would be wrong with creating a lottery system which, in the long run, was aimed at eliminating the debt also had a priority of concern for the creation of new millionaires? For example instead of giving $500 million to one individual, give it to 500 persons and let them all share in the taxation of the winnings as well as the benefits attained in their newly created condition?

What say you, isn't that a fairly good idea? Any comment?
