Tritons squeeze out 9-inning win over Cape, 3-2

The Mariner Tritons have grown accustomed to playing extra innings, even early in the new season.

In six games, the Tritons played their fourth extra-inning game Tuesday night and prevailed 3-2 in nine innings over crosstown rival Cape Coral. The Tritons have won three of the extra-inning games.

The Tritons were outhit 7-5 by the Seahawks, but Cape committed seven errors in the game, including one at first base in the ninth inning that handed the victory to the Tritons (3-3).

Luis Ferrer started the game on the mound for the Tritons, striking out seven and allowing all seven hits over seven innings. After the Seahawks scored both their runs in the top of the sixth inning off Ferrer, he made up for it in the bottom of the inning with a two-out, two-run single up the middle to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

In the ninth, Victory Marrero led off with a double and Ferrer was intentionally walked. Chase Hunt then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled at first base allowing pinch-runner Wyatt Deems to score the game-winning run.

Tony Lopez had two hits for the Tritons while Billy Pryor, Matt Richey and Jose Valmana contributed two hits apiece for the Seahawks (2-2).

Luke Spangler pitched seven innings for the Seahawks, allowing three hits and striking out eight.

Von Graeber (2-0) pitched two hitless innings in relief for the Bulldogs with two strikeouts and earn the win.

The Tritons host Palmetto Ridge on Thursday while the Seahawks host Naples Thursday.

Ida Baker 14, Riverdale 4: Caleb Farmer sprayed three hits and Sean Brady struck out eight batters for his third win on the mound to lead Ida Baker to victory Tuesday over Riverdale.

Zack Nason and Tanner Renegar contributed two hits apiece for the Bulldogs (5-1), who play Thursday at Cypress Lake.

Softball

Mariner 3, Cape Coral 2: Winning pitcher Alyssa Langdale and teammate Ali Hunt played key roles Tuesday night in Mariner's one-run victory in 11 innings over crosstown rival Cape Coral.

The Seahawks, who have lost five straight games, rallied to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning. It stayed that way for four more innings.

With two out in the 11th, Heather Gillions got on with a double setting the table for Hunt (2-for-5), who came through with the game-winning RBI single.

Langdale (3-for-4) pitched all 11 innings for the Tritons, striking out 15. Her counterpart, Makenzie Buss, struck out nine for the Seahawks (4-5).

The Tritons (5-2) host Port Charlotte Thursday night while the Seahawks host Lemon Bay on Friday.
