Issue affects more than Skyline neighborhood

February 16, 2013
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

In reference to The Breeze article of Feb. 9 entitled "Skyline neighbors vow to continue gas station fight," all residents of Cape Coral need to know why the Skyline Waterways residents have rallied against a 7-11 convenience store gas station on the corner of Cape Coral Parkway. and Skyline Blvd.

The main reasons - acknowledged by City Council, Planning & Zoning (P&Z) and Skyline Waterways neighbors - the lot is primarily in a residential area and too small. In addition, the 7-11 will have the Dumpster located on the front corner of the intersection and an 8-foot high wall built behind bordering residential condominiums.

City Council and P&Z have voted repeatedly since December 2011 to approve and/or deny the re-zoning, special exceptions and variances for the construction of the 7-11. Neither the City Council nor P&Z want to be responsible for making this awful decision.

The recent City Council meeting on Jan. 28 was a spectacle of poor behavior and verbal abuse. The City Council, developer and property owner made malicious verbal attacks on Skyline Waterways residents.

During the voting process on the Skyline Waterways Appeals, almost every member of the City Council denounced the gas station. Councilmember Erbrick told the Skyline Waterways group she "hated" the project, but we had not made a good case. The environmental argument was deleted from our presentation because we, and everyone else, believed Creighton was only building a convenience store. Both Skyline Waterways appeals were denied.

We will now be looking closely at our elected officials and their opponents in the upcoming election and the developers who support them. Keep in mind; this could be your Cape Coral neighborhood. Ask yourself - Is the current City Council doing their best for the residents of Cape Coral or doing their best for the developers?
