Gators knock off Sharks 71-57

Four players scored in double figures Thursday night as the Island Coast Gators won a coastal battle against Gulf Coast 71-57 in the Region 6A-3 semifinal round at Gulf Coast.

Angel Inchausti led a hail of three-point baskets by the Gators (16-12), hitting six of the team's 10 treys. Kaleb Darrett added 18 points, Jordan Lugo contributed 15 points, and Morgan Foreman 11.

"I think we wore them down in the fourth quarter," said Gators coach Greg Coleman. "They are a big team. They usually wear other teamd down, but we faced adversity head-on and crushed it."

The Gators held the Sharks without a field goal and just four points in the fourth quarter. The teams entered the final period tied 53-53.

Darrett had five assists and four steals to go with his 18 points, including a monster dunk with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining to put an exclamation point on the Gators' 10-0 run.

"I think the dunk took the life out of them," said Coleman.

Sonel Mathurin did not score a point, but contributed to the victory with 16 rebounds while Lugo grabbed seven boards.

The win sends the Gators into Tuesday's regional semifinal round against district rival and champion Fort Myers, which disposed of Naples 53-39.

Lely 50, Cape Coral 47: A lapse in execution in the third quarter hampered Cape Coral's bid to advance in the Region 5A-3 playoffs Thursday night resulting in a three-point loss at Lely.

"We fell flat in the third quarter," said Seahawks coach Tom Kenna. "We got no execution for a couple of minutes, but got it back and played hard."

The Seahawks (12-17) led by one point with a minute remaining, but Lely scored to take a one point lead. The Seahwks had ball possession in the final six seconds, but was unable to get off a shot at the end.

"I'm proud of the guys," said Kenna. "For the first time in a few years we won a district (playoff) game. We were the better team tonight, just didn't get it done."

Chase Galuzny led the Seahawks with 15 points, Andrew Taylor added 12 and David Flynn contributed 10 to the cause.

Lely advances to the regional semifinal round next Tuesday against Gulf Coast, which eliminated Mariner 68-64 Thursday.
