To the editor:
Cape Coral, Fort Myers and in general all of Lee County can be pleased that crime rates have decreased by double digits according to the latest statistic.
Fort Myers Police Chief Doug Baker attributes the high percentage drop in burglary and theft in Fort Myers (-24 percent) to better vigilance in the community. "People are doing a better job of locking their cars, taking valuables out of their cars, doing a better job with their homes," he said. Good.
Now let's give credit where credit is due. More Guns Less Crime, a book by John R. Lott, Jr., statistically states and shows empirically the real reason crime rates are down. That is, of course, the more guns available to law-abiding citizens the less crime.
Florida's growing concealed weapons permits have now reached over 1 million. Last summer, Gov. Scott spoke, saying we had the lowest crime rate in 40 years. Facts show that 1,000 lives have been saved between 2006 and 2010 with the Stand Your Ground law. The homicide rate dropped 16.1 percent during that time according to the Department of Justice Office of Statistics. You may have been one of those 1,000 lives saved. Congratulations!
More guns, less crime.
