Retired Commander Gordon Ray Anderson, USN

Retired Commander Gordon Ray Anderson, USN, 83, born in Falconer, N.Y., on April 20, 1929, passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013.

His naval career began when he entered recruit training at the age of 18. His 31 years of service included tours of duty onboard the USS Newport News; submarines, USS Carbonero, USS Salmon, USS Rock, and his final commanding tour on the USS Mackerel. In January 1972, he reported to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., until his retirement in 1979.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Elaine Noonan Anderson, and his son, Bruce Ray Anderson.

He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Tallerico, Joan Palmer and Tracey Tarmon, and his son, Scott Anderson. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Jerome, Jennifer, Darrell, David, Karen, Erin, Ryan, Corey, Lauren, Emily, Derek and Madison; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A loving husband and devoted father, he was a man of honor, integrity and generosity. He lived his life as an exemplary officer and true gentleman. His influence and presence will be greatly missed and the memories will be deeply cherished.

The family is being assisted by Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers.
